Every Texan knows the awesomeness that is Shiner beer, They’ve had a summer seasonal out for a few weeks now that’s flavored with prickly pear cactus fruit. My fellow Tejanos probably know them better as tunas from nopales .
I spent a couple of weeks looking for it because everywhere I went always seemed to be out. Finally found it at an HEB (another Texas staple). Huzzah!
Anyway, I highly recommend it. It’s a lager and the prickly pear adds just a hint of floral sweetness you sense more when you first take a sip, rather than while it sits on your tongue. It ends with a clean, smooth finish.
I think fans of Shiner’s Ruby Redbird — made with ruby red grapefruit grown exclusively in the southern part of the state — would appreciate the Prickly Pear. It’s really light, and only 4.9 percent alcohol by volume, so you could knock a few back while spending an entire afternoon beneath the famous hot Texas sun. (Edit: realized I still had a bottle of the Ruby Redbird in the fridge, so here’s that).
So yeah, that’s Shiner’s Prickly Pear summer seasonal lager. Salúd!
And a prickly pear blossom, because it’s that time of year.
One more addendum: Shiner bottle caps make excellent fridge magnets. :D

I’m... uh, enjoying some delicious Dr. Pepper. Y’know, it’s just as good as beer.

Grain Belt > Shiner Bock
Maybe when you realize this people will stop messing with Texas.

Thanks for this. I’ve been seeing billboards for it around town and been on the fence about picking up a 12-pack. I'll give it a shot!

Dr Pepper (no period after the "Dr") is fan-fucking-tastic. It's pretty much the only American soda I really like.
Cheers, mate! And don't be a stranger! You should stop by the chat. Blunion, too. Where'd you guys go? Heh.

Idk, I sorta keep forgetting we have an IRC channel going on.

You’re welcome! ^_^
Though I've only ever seen them in 6-packs.

Shiner Bock is only one of many kinds of Shiner, and I’m still fairly confident it’s better than whatever that is that you posted a photo of. :) #TexasForever

This is exactly what I was looking for!
I had a tough decision the other day between Ruby Redbird and the Prickly Pear seasonal, and went with Ruby Redbird. I’ll try the Prickly Pear next time!

Much jealous. We have predominately yellow PP blooms here. I do have a couple that bloom pink, though. Must have come from somewhere else.

Shiner Bock was the first draft beer I drank legally in a bar once I turned 21. Good memories there. Didn’t realize they had seasonal varieties. I’ll have to keep an eye open.

Also made in Texas.

Can confirm, Prickly Pear and Ruby Redbird are both fantastic.

One of the few beers that I love out of the bottle but hate on tap. Had it at a bar here in CS and it smelled like cough syrup. That made drinking it tough. Out of a bottle? No problem. Love it.

Oh yeah, most of the ones here bloom yellow, too, but I always keep an eye out for the ones that don’t. I search for them, actually. I shot the melon-y orange one I posted here at a place where I also saw some red ones. And I got some more dusty orange ones elsewhere. I’ve seen pink, too, just not this season (so far). I’ve been meaning to put up a post on Photography. If I remember, I’ll try to give you a heads up.

Yep! You ever had one from the soda fountain at the Dr Pepper Museum in Waco? Yummy stuff.
Are you a Texan, too, nth?

They’re both pretty great. I like that the Ruby Redbird has a bit of a tartness to it from the grapefruit that’s then mellowed out at the end by the spiciness of the ginger. It’s a really good combination. Also, try the Shiner variety pack. It’s got a sample of their Premium (with a cool retro label) and one called Haymaker. I liked both.

Yup. They also put one out around Christmas, but I haven't tried that one yet.

Haven’t been up to the Dr P Museum yet, I think that’s gonna be a quick road trip this summer. I have been to the Shiner plant tho! They give some good-sized samples after the tour!
I live in Austin, since 2011, not sure if that makes me Texan... But I’ll gladly keep drinking your beer and eating your BBQ!

While there’s no greater honor than being born a Texan, being an adopted Texan is a mighty fine thing, too. ^_~
But seriously, there are bumper stickers that say “I wasn’t born in Texas but I got here as quick as I could.”
And of course you can keep eating our BBQ and drinking our beer! We love sharing! :D

Shiner is pretty good for the widely distributed stuff, but we’re undergoing somewhat of a renaissance here in DFW. Between Peticolas, Lakewood, Rahr, Deep Ellum, Community, Four Corners, Revolver, Grapevine, Martin House, and so on and so forth, we’re spoiled rotten. And we’re getting new ones left and right. The old brewmaster at Deep Ellum (and before that Schlafly) just defected to Braindead, which should start producing shortly for both on-premise consumption and distribution given the size of their operation. Hopefully Dead Cowboy gets up and running sometime as well, I know they’ve been trying for some time.

Yeah, do that.
They transplant easy. So I slowly getting some nice colored ones in my yard.

I just took a visit to north texas “Amarillo” area and me and my co worker were fucking pounding beers , and for the life of. Us we couldn’t figure out why we where not getting drunk. I asked the waitress if we were drinking real beer she looked at me funny and said “yeah!?” . Then some other guy at the bar looked at us and said 3.2. Sorry Texas, I can’t handle.
![]() 05/03/2015 at 23:38 |

3.2? What the fuck were you drinking, TL? Lol.
Anyway, other than that, how goes it? Long time no see.

It goes medium to well lol. I just felt like I was hitting my head on a wall lol. How bout you!? I hope life has been good and full of joy!

I’ve seen this everywhere but was wondering whether I should buy a whole 6-pack just in case I didn’t like it, so now I will try it on your rec xylo! Shiner Bock is my go-to draft order when a bar doesn’t have something more local and I am also a fan of the Ruby Redbird (and of putting grapefruit in all beers all the time everywhere! Well I mean not really since some beers would be quite gross with grapefruit but I mean like a lot of could benefit from it).

Shiner is losing its way by trying too hard to copy the Samuel Adams’ play on the
31 Flavors
approach. Prickly Pear is nice and sweet, but it’s hard to take more than one. Ruby Redbird on the other hand is vile, winecooler-esque swill.
Regular Shiner Bock is still my daily gulper beer, but my favorite Texas beers these days are coming out of Karbach Brewing Co.

There’s no state 3.2 law in Texas. You sure you weren’t in Oklahoma?

Ya might actually be right, I was right by the border.

Heh. Thanks, umlaut! Yeah, I really liked it. And I’m a big fan of ginger, so the Ruby Redbird was a nice surprise when I first tried that.
Anyhoo, it's good to see ya, Umlaut! I've followed you for Oppo so you won't be in the grey anymore. :)

Lol. Tell me how you really feel, Zuzax. Heh.
But damn, that's one strong aversion to the Ruby Redbird! I still like it. You want a wine cooler-esque sweet beer? Try Wild Blue's blueberry lager. Now that is sweet. Tastes like it has blueberry pancake syrup in it. Ironically, I kinda like that one, too. But only when it's ice cold and I'm on a very hot beach.
I’ll look up your rec. Thanks for stopping by. :)

I just picked up a 6 pack of the Ruby Redbird today. I like the Prickly Pear and I’m glad that it’s the new summer seasonal to replace the Ruby Redbird.
I love Spoetzl Brewery and Shiner, and I’m incredibly grateful for the short internship I had there. Fantastic people. Fantastic beer. Redbird is the nicest person. Everyone who works there is pretty cool. It’s a fantastic historic brewery to visit.
